WILDLIFE AND ZOONOSES IN THE NETHERLANDS

N.Tafro, veterinarian; F. van Knapen, Hoofdafdeling VVDO, Yalelaan 2, 3508 TD Utrecht, The Netherlands

Zoonoses are diseases that can be transmitted from animals to human beings and may result in severe disease. Besides domestic animals and exotic animals, free-living animals also are the reservoir of zoonoses that occur in the Netherlands. To be able to estimate the risk for public health, it is important to know which animal species are the main reservoir, what the prevalence of the disease is, and how infection may be tranmitted to human beings. The aim of this presentation is an attempt to provide an as complete as possible overview of bacterial, parasitic, viral and prion zoonoses of wildlife that may play a role in the Netherlands from the point of view of public health. Wildlife is here limited to hunted and consumed wild animals and consists of the following species: wild boar, deer, roe deer, rabbits, hares, ducks, pheasants, and partridges.
