Blood samples from 961 free-living ungulates (601 red deer, Cervus elaphus;
353 roe deer, Capreolus capreolus; 7 moufflon, Ovis musimon) were collected
during the 2001 and 2002 hunting seasons in south Belgium. A competitive ELISA
was used to screen all sera for antibodies against glycoprotein B of bovine
herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1).
The overall seroprevalence was 28.95% (95% confidence
interval [C.I.]: 25.27 to 32.63) in red deer and 1.41 % (95% C.I.: 0.17 to
2.65) in roe deer. In a subset of red deer, the seroprevalence in juveniles
(18.66% ; 95% C.I.: 13.28 to 24.04) was significantly lower than in subadults
and adults (40% ; 95% C.I.: 33.86 to 46.14). The seroprevalence in some areas
was significantly higher than in others.
This preliminary study shows that
a alphaherpesvirus related to BoHV-1 is present in red deer populations. Additional
analysis will be performed in order to determine whether the antibodies found
are directed to cervine herpesvirus 1.
